International Peace Day is on September 21st but in Spain, schools celebrate Peace Day on January 30th every year, on the anniversary of the death of Mahatma Gandhi. Peace Day is a day when we think about respect and friendship. People ask for peace and harmony for everyone. The message is: Love is better than egoism, Non-violence is better than violence, and Peace is better than war.

We were making pinwheels at the school last days with our own wishes for peace.

During this school year we are working on a project about Asia and one of the most important celebrations is the beginning of the Chinese New Year on January 23th. Year 2012 is the Year of the Dragon by the Chinese calendar which is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The dragon is a symbol of good luck, strength and power.

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family affair with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth, the gods of the household and the family ancestors. The spirit underlying the diverse celebrations of the Chinese New Year is the same: a sincere wish of peace and happiness for the family members and friends.

Christmas crackers are an integral part of Christmas celebrations. A cracker consists of a cardboard tube wrapped in a brightly decorated paper. The cracker is pulled by two people. The split is accompanied by a small bang or snapping sound.

Crackers are typically pulled at the Christmas dinner table or at parties. In one version of the cracker tradition, the person with the larger portion of cracker empties the contents from the tube and keeps them. Typically these contents are a coloured paper hat or crown, a small toy and a joke on a small strip of paper.

You can make a Christmas cracker following the instructions in the video. Try it. It's quite easy.

Christmas In JAPAN

Christmas was introduced in Japan by the Christian missionaries, but now the Christmas season in Japan is full of meaning and is almost universally observed. The idea of exchanging gifts seems to appeal strongly to the Japanese people. For several weeks before the day, there are decorations and wonderful displays of appropriate gifts for men, women, and children -- especially children.

Many western customs have been adopted by the Japanese. They also eat turkey on Christmas Day, and in some places there are even community Christmas trees. They decorate their houses with evergreens and mistletoe, and in some homes Christmas carols are sung gaily.

In Japan there is a god or priest known as Hoteiosho, who closely resembles Santa Claus. He is always pictured as a kind old man carrying a huge pack. New Year's Day is the most important day of the whole calendar in Japan. On New Year's Eve the houses are cleaned and decorated. Then the father of the household marches through the house, followed by all the family (dress themselves in their finest clothes), and drives the evil spirits out. He throws dried beans into every corner bidding the evil spirits withdraw and good luck enter.

To celebrate it I want to show you an event that happened yesterday, September 11th, and it is a famous British tradition. It was the Last Night of the Proms in the UK – the last night of a series of seventy or so classical concerts held yearly in the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Galician Literature Day

On May 17th we celebrate "Galician Literature Day". In this year 2011 it is dedicated to the Montfortian poet Lois Pereiro.

He wrote a lot of poems and recently a selection of them were translated into English by Jonathan Dunne and published by Small Station Editions.

Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs

These days we are talking about environment and pollution in class. I want to show you an English artist who painted industrial landscapes. Maybe it was his way to report that progress is not always good for the environment.
The other special feature of this painter was his way of painting people and animals as matchsticks. So two singers wrote a song about him which became a big hit. I hope you find him interesting.

LS Lowry

Lawrence Stephen Lowry ( 1887 - 1976 ) was a famous English artist, who was born and lived for most of his life in Manchester . Lowry was famous for painting industrial scenes, and scenes of life in northern England during the early 20th century . He had a highly distinctive style of painting, which often involved "matchstick men" figures of distant people in industrial scenes, using drab colours.
Lowry was born into a poor working class family, and worked for many years as a rent collector and a cashier, painting in his spare time. His work only began to be appreciated by the wider art world towards the end of his life.
An art gallery called "The Lowry" centre was opened in Manchester in 2000 . Much of his work is displayed there.

Here are some of Lowry's paintings. Lowry died in 1976 and, a year later, the song "Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs" was realeased by Brian and Michael. In February 1978 it reached no.1 in the charts and sold a total of 750,000 records.

A Royal Wedding: Prince William and Kate Middleton Kiss

Next Friday, April 29th, Prince William and Kate Middleton will marry at Westminster Abbey.
William, who is second in the line of succession to Queen Elizabeth II, first met Middleton in 2001, while he and Middleton were studying at the University of St Andrews.

Their engagement, on 20 October 2010, was announced on 16 November 2010. After the wedding, the couple intend to continue residing on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales, where Prince William is based as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot.

In these countries, this day is also known as Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday, because it is customary to eat pancakes on this day. Pancake day is usually celebrated in February, on the day before Lent begins.

A pancake is a thin, flat cake, made of butter and fried in a pan. This year Pancake day or Shrove Tuesday falls on March 8th.

One of the best known Pancake Day celebrations is a pancake race in which everybody flips pancakes in pans as they run.

The Origin and History of Saint Valentine

Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14th every year. It is a day to display affection. People send cards, called valentines, to their friends, family, and loved ones. Verses on valentines often rhyme and express love and affection. Sometimes valentines contain humorous pictures or puns - but almost all ask, "Be My Valentine."

Valentine's Day falls on the feast day of two different Christian martyrs named Valentine. The customs of Valentine's Day has nothing to do with the lives of the saints. It is believed that the customs come from an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia which took place every February 15. The festival honored Juno, the Roman goddess of women and marriage - and Pan, the god of nature.

Valentine's day is a great day to celebrate our friends. School children decorate their classrooms with bright red paper hearts. They exchange gifts, candy, flowers or "valentines."

Last week we were talking about some French Artist as Renoir, Braque or Cézanne.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841 - 1919) was a French painter who painted about 6000 pictures during the 60 years he worked as an artist. When he was 4 years old his family moved to Paris.
Renoir began as a singer but decided to be a painter when he was 13.
Later he met Edgar Degas and Edouard Manet and became one of the first 'Impressionists'. His work was light and lively showing scenes of daily Paris life with people socialising and enjoying life.

Here are some paintings by this great French painter.

Other artist was the american Roi Lichtenstein one of the biggest names in Pop art.
In Barcelona there is one of his works.

Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival celebrated in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving was a holiday to express thankfulness, gratitude, and appreciation to God, family and friends for which all have been blessed of material possessions and relationships. Traditionally, it has been a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest.

It is celebrated in the United States of America on the fourth Thursday in November, which means that this year it will be held on 25th November. It has been a national holiday since 1863 and it commemorates the first joint thanksgiving dinner which took place in 1622.

Do you know why this festivity is called Thanksgiving?

In 1620, a group of British pilgrims reached the East coast of America. The pilgrims nearly starved in their first year as they were unfamiliar with the land and their crops didn't grow. Luckily for them, the Wampanoag Indians helped them adapt to the new terrain and by the autumn of 1622 they were able to offer the Indians a dinner in thanks for the help received.

These days, American families get together to exchange presents and to eat turkey and apple or pumpkin pie.

Today I want to show you a great movie. I recommend you to watch it when you have a chance.
Master and Commander is a film directed by Peter Weir, starring Russell Crowe as Jack Aubrey, with Paul Bettany as Stephen Maturin. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Academy Award for Best Picture, and won in two categories, Best Cinematography and Sound Effects Editing.
It's based on a historical naval novel by Patrick O'Brian. The story is about Captain Jack Aubrey and the naval surgeon Stephen Maturin. During the Napoleonic Wars, a brave British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America.
With the scenes of the film you can enjoy listening to Boccherini "La Musica Notturna". I think it's absolutely fantastic!!

Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is celebrated across the UK on 5 November. The date marks the failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament by Guy Fawkes with a group of conspirators in London in 1605.

The intention was to kill King James I and wipe out everyone in government. The group were Catholic extremists who wanted to return England to the Catholic faith. One of the conspirators had a friend in the Houses of Parliament and sent a letter to him, warning him to stay away from the House on the day the attack was supposed to take place. The letter was intercepted and handed to the king.

Nowadays on Bonfire Night people organise their own bonfires or attend fireworks displays. They stand around the bonfire, set off fireworks and eat lots of nice warming Bonfire Night foods, like sausages and jacket potatoes.

Galicia's National Day

On 25th July We celebrate the national day of our country "Galicia's National Day". It is also called "Day of the Galician Fatherland"(Día da Patria Galega) or simply "Galicia's Day". In words of Castelao: "The most important holiday of Galicia, the holiday of Galicians".

The origins of this celebration are gone up at 1919, when the Assembly of the Galicianist organization Irmandades da Fala met in the Galician capital, Santiago de Compostela. It was then decided to celebrate the National Day on the 25th of July of the following year. The date was chosen as it is the day dedicated to Saint James, patron saint of both Galicia and the Galician capital city. Irmandades da Fala organise the first Day from Galicia as an act of affirmation of our collective identity.

St. James, the apostle, is also the patron saint of Spain. The city where his remains are held, Santiago de Compostela, is considered the third most holy town after Jerusalem and Rome. The traditional pilgrimage to the grave of the saint, known as the "Way of St. James", has become the most popular pilgrimage for Western European Catholics. When 25th July falls on a Sunday, it is a ″Jubilee year", and a special east door is opened for entrance into the Santiago Cathedral.
This year 2010 is a Jubille year and this wonderful and historic city is full of people visiting and enjoying the special celebrations.

Galician Letters Day

Today, May 17th, is "Galician Literature Day" or "Galician Letters Day". It's a day of celebration around the Galician language and its literature.
The first celebration took place in 1963 to commemorate the centenary of Cantares gallegos, the first work written in Galician language by Rosalía de Castro (1837–1885), who later became one of the most important poets in the history of Galicia. Cantares gallegos was first published on May 17, 1863.
Since 1963, each Galician Literature Day has been dedicated to a different writer in the Galician language. This writer must be dead, and is chosen by the Real Academia Galega (Royal Galician Academy).
This year is dedicated to Uxío Novoneyra, a poet from El Caurel, who died in 1999. He wrote many poems like the one in this video.
